Distance surgery in Morocco: an unprecedented feat for Akdital

This Friday, May 2, 2025, Dr. Adil Ouzzane, urologist surgeon and robotic surgery expert, successfully produced a remote robot-assistant prostatectomy. From the Casablanca International Oncology Center (CIOC), and thanks to the mobilization of exceptional technological and human resources, Dr. Ouzzane has led a complex surgery on a patient supported by the International Polyclinic Laâyoune (Pil). According to the medical staff, the patient is doing well, and will be able to leave the polyclinic quickly.

In order to materialize this medical advance, the AKDITAL group made a major investment to equip its clinics in Casablanca and Laâyoune with latest generation surgical robots. These devices offer surgeons an optimized amplitude of motion and increased dexterity, guaranteeing more precise and effective interventions. Patients benefit fully, with reduced operating time and accelerated recovery, thus improving their comfort and post-operative management.

Connectivity between the two clinics is also a key element. Thus, the Direction of Information Systems of the AKDITAL Group has set up a high availability architecture, with an extremely short response time (20 milliseconds). SD-WAN technology has been used with two different private connectivity access: one by fiber optic and another wireless (by hertzian beam). The goal is to guarantee a safe operation for the patient and a simple and natural experience for the surgeon, as if he were operating directly in Laâyoune.

The intervention was controlled by Dr. Adil Ouzzane, urologist surgeon and president of the Moroccan Robotic Surgery Society (MSRS). He brilliantly manipulated the robotic console from Casablanca, while the “patient trolley” carried out the surgeon’s commands on the patient in Laâyoune, more than 1,100 km away!

In the operating room of the International Polyclinic Laâyoune, the 52 -year -old patient was surrounded by Dr Younes Tibari and Professor Adil Mellouki, both surgeons urologists, ready to intervene in the event of a connection of connection between the two establishments. Dr. Khalid Azizi, resuscitator and medical director of the International Polyclinic Laâyoune, brilliantly managed the anesthesia component of this complex operation. Added to this is the mobilization of an experienced paramedical staff, under the supervision of Siham Bouhtouri, director of care of the Akdital group.

“Our patient is doing well, and that’s what matters above all. I am particularly proud to have carried out this first in Morocco. That a doctor in Casablanca could operate his patient in Laâyoune was, not so long ago, unimaginable. Today, it has become a reality, ”said Dr. Adil Ouzzane.

For his part, Dr. Rochdi Talib, CEO of the AKDITAL group, said: “I always dreamed that my Moroccan fellow citizens, even in the most distant areas, can benefit from the skills of our experts installed in big cities. Today we have done it, and we are proud of it. This opens the way to a real decentralization of high -tech care for everyone, everywhere in Morocco ”.
