A fire that could have been avoided

A sorting error would have caused an important fire in a Lorraine recycling center west of Metz.

“The risk, we know him, we know that this kind of installation can experience fires,” sighs Julien Bestedjerari, the president of the Sirtom. The day before, Wednesday, April 9, an important fire broke out on the Transit quay – opposite the seat – of the Jarny recycling center. “The fire is smothered: at 6:45 p.m., small fumarolles are detected on surveillance cameras; At 7 p.m., it’s starting to burn; At 8 p.m., the heap is completely ie. ” It is a mountain that is the prey of the flames: 200 m3 waste waiting to be crushed and compacted.

“Fortunately, the firefighters were there very quickly,” observes the manager of the premises. Under the orders of Lieutenant Jonathan Corradi, around twenty soldiers from Jarny, Val de Briey, Hatrize, Mancielles and Moineville will take turns until 10 a.m. Thursday morning. “We were able to put out the fire relatively quickly, but the work of clearing and monitoring, to avoid any recovery, is extremely long,” confides the latter. “We recalled two staff members to help manipulate the heaps with the crane and the telescopic fork vehicles,” says Julien Besedjerari. Waste is spread out in small packages, cooled, moved. And so on.

Gas cylinders, batteries …

“They stayed until 4 a.m. What makes me angry is that we could have avoided it. We are 99 % sure that the fire is due to a sorting error. ” Employees have found small gas cylinders, nitrogen oxide cartridges and batteries. “All of this has nothing to do in the all-year-old,” explains Séverine Pinna, responsible for communication from the Sirtom. There are special sectors for reprocessing small household appliances, for batteries and batteries of all kinds. An agent is present in recycling center to refer users who would hesitate on the bucket in which to throw the waste. ”

In this case, they had been slipped into black, opaque bags, household waste. “The problem is that a pierced battery will ignite very quickly,” insists Julien Bessedjerari. You have to think about it: there are some in many children’s toys too. ” This time, the damage was relatively unimportant to Sirtom. But the team specifies that luck was for its part, there was no wind, for example, which could have propagated the flames in the neighboring field. A bad experience that must serve as an example.
