The French Blood Establishment launches an appeal to donors from the AB group, infected and then healed from Chikungunya. Their plasma, carrier of antibodies, could allow infants to better fight the serious forms of the virus.
This donor did not ask himself the question for a moment. Accustomed to giving her blood every two months for four years, she makes an appointment at the French Blood Establishment, challenged by their awareness campaign on social networks: “ I am AB so I wanted to give my blood as I usually did. And there again a little more in view of the chikungunya epidemic and as it is for newborns. »
The donors must be from the AB blood group, having contracted chikungunya in the past six months, not being sick for 30 days and no longer has symptoms.
After the sample, Doctor Guillaume Maccio analyzes the blood to separate the plasma. He can then attribute which gifts will be assigned to such infants: “What will intervene is the weight and age, and then necessarily the result of his chikungunya antibodies, which will be decisive to know if the plasmas will be effective or not for care. »»
Since last Wednesday, the establishment has collected a dozen samples. About twenty additional is expected by the end of the week.
