Quebecers are not about to store their coat: May promises to be as changing as the last days of April.
May began under spring appearance for most regions of the province, with sun and temperatures close to normal.
This “fairly typical” springtime time is expected to continue in the first week of the month, but Quebecers must expect “important fluctuations” in terms of temperatures, according to environmental forecasts and climate change Canada published Thursday.
“Daily minimums could even sometimes approach 0 ° C, thus extending the risk of frost,” he said.
In terms of precipitation, the first week of the month promises to be relatively active, while depressional systems “will continue to follow one another at regular intervals”, offering only a few days of respite.
The second half of the month should look like the last days of April with “a big gap” between maximum temperatures and minimums.
-A rather quiet April?
Environment and Climate Change Canada believes that April was “rather quiet”, with temperatures close to normal for most of the Quebec regions.
Temperatures are then descended under normal during the second week of the month.
In general, April was marked by three events:
– A border of snow and a fall in mercury, April 8: a system from the West brought between 10 and 20 cm snow between the Outaouais and the center of Quebec.
– Strong rain and snow between April 25 and 27: a depression from Colorado intensified above the Great Lakes and spilled a lot of rain on the west, the south, the center and the east of the province. This episode has left between 20 and 40 mm of rain in the western, south and center of the province regions, with accumulations reaching up to 50 mm in places in Gaspésie and in the Ile-la-Madeleine.
– The thunderstorms of April 29 in southern Quebec: as a cold front approach, the first violent thunderstorms of the season occurred in particular from Pontiac to Greater Montreal as well as in the north of Lanaudière. Wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h have been recorded in several places.
