Some 12 % of Americans interviewed by the Pew Research Center in March appointed Canada as their main ally, compared to 6 % in 2023.

The survey of more than 3,600 Americans revealed that 18 % of them cited the United Kingdom as their main ally, compared to 22 % in 2023.

In addition, 74 % of a subset of 1804 Americans interviewed said they had a favorable opinion from Canada, although the survey revealed a deep division according to the parties. Only 61 % of Republican respondents had a favorable opinion from Canada, compared to 87 % of Democrats.

With 77 %, Japan came at the top of the classification of other countries by the Americans interviewed, followed by Canada and Italy (74 %each) and the United Kingdom (70 %).

The agency interviewed 3605 adults in the United States from March 24 to 30, through an online survey and by telephone, weighted according to demographic data.

Donald Trump announced that Prime Minister Mark Carney would go to Washington in a few days, but his office has not yet confirmed this visit.
