Hamas has severely criticized Switzerland’s decision to declare its activities on its territory illegal. The Palestinian Islamist movement accuses Berne of abandoning its historical neutrality and of showing a “dangerous and condemnable bias in favor of the Israeli occupation”.
In a declaration reported by the Palestinian daily Filastin, the Islamist group describes the measure as a “denial of legal and humanitarian responsibilities” of the Confederation, in particular at a time marked by the “genocidal war” led by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
The Federal Council announced Wednesday that Hamas will be prohibited in Switzerland for five years, from May 15. The prohibition not only aims at Hamas but also organizations serving as a cover, those which emanate from it, as well as the organizations and groups which act on its order or in its name.
Why this choice?
This decision aims to ensure the internal and external security of Switzerland, to facilitate criminal procedures and to combat the financing of terrorism. It will also be more effective and easy to take preventive police measures, such as entry prohibitions or evictions.
-In the fight against the financing of terrorism, the Swiss authorities will also be able to more easily exchange with their foreign counterparts information on financial flows in the event of suspicion. The project allows a better overview and more transparency on financial flows. (Jah/ATS)
