The Ministry of Health and Social Action, through the National Program for the Fight against Malaria (PNLP), launches the 4th mass distribution campaign of mosquito nets impregnated with insecticide (MILDA). For 15 days, more than 6 million people will be affected by this synchronized campaign initiated with Gambia.
The National Program for the Fight against Malaria (PNLP), in partnership with Senegal Plan, is organizing a mass distribution campaign of insecticide mosquito nets in 8 regions. Initiated in collaboration with Gambia, it will be launched, on May 13, 2025, in Farafénie. It is a synchronized campaign to distribute insecticide mosquito nets. For Senegal, it concerns 8 regions, 7, sharing the border with Gambia.
As a prelude to this activity, PNLP organized, yesterday, in Dakar, an information sharing workshop with the Association of Health Journalists, Populations and Development (AJSPD).
Launched in 2016, then in 2019, 2022 and 2025, the mass distribution of mosquito nets makes it possible to achieve the objective of eliminating malaria in 2030. “For this reason, we launch the 4th edition of the mass distribution campaign of mosquito nets impregnated with insecticide (MII) in 8 regions of Senegal with 4,190,100 units to be distributed in 33 sanitary districts” Indicated Professor Aliou Thiongane, Coordinator of the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP). With new technologies, this campaign will be digitalized with 5,222 tablets to distribute to actors on the ground. The latter were chosen and trained to facilitate data collection. This campaign will provide mosquito nets to households and drastically reduce the incidence of malaria in Senegal, in particular by reducing mortality linked to this disease and interrupting the chain of transmission. “If we can bring at least 80% of the population to sleep under mosquito nets imbued with insecticide, this will allow us to reduce infant-juvenile mortality by 25%,” said Professor Thiongane. According to him, “during this 15 -day campaign, 11,468 actors, including 9,823 community relays and 1645 supervisors, will be mobilized with the aim of receiving 6,717,045 people in the 33 targeted health districts; or 35% of the Senegalese population ”. He informed that 1,646 sites have been identified.
Senegal has set itself the priority to leave the red zone made up of the regions of Kaolack, Kaffrine, Tambacounda, Ziguinchor, Kolda, Sédhiou, Kédougou and Matam to enter into the so -called green or pre -elimination. “In the green zone, we have a prevalence rate of less than 1% of cases by malaria. With regard to the intermediate zone, we are at 5 to 15 cases for 1,000 inhabitants and that red to more than 15 cases for 1,000 inhabitants, ”explained the PNLP coordinator.
In the Kédougou region, the situation is very critical with more than 700 cases of malaria, a rate of 70%. Despite these figures, it is still possible to eliminate malaria. “It’s possible, but we need means. In 10 years, we have gone from a mortality rate of 30 to 3%. In 5 years, therefore, we can eliminate this disease, “said the PNLP coordinator.
