In view of the Tabaski festival, Senegal intensifies its procedures to guarantee the supply of the national sheep market. A mission led by the Secretary of State for Cooperatives and Farmer Supervision went to Mali, the main supplier country.

As tabaski approaches, Senegal is mobilizing to avoid any tension on the sheep market. The Secretary of State for Cooperatives and Farmer Supervision, Dr Alpha Ba, currently conducts an official mission to Mali, with the Ambassador of Senegal to Bamako, the Governor of Tambacounda and the Director of Livestock. This delegation is responsible for strengthening cross -border cooperation in farming, with the aim of ensuring a fluid, secure and sufficient supply of sheep for the Senegalese market.

According to official figures, Mali provided 36.95 % of sheep imported by Senegal in 2024, or 109,920 heads out of a total of 297,488. This year, national demand is estimated at 830,000 heads, including 260,000 for the Dakar region alone. To fill the GAP, Senegal plans to import 250,000 sheep, mainly from Mali.

This initiative aims to prevent speculation, prices outbreak and recurring supply tensions during Tabaski. It also reflects the will of the Senegalese authorities to better supervise cattle import circuits, while consolidating cooperation relations with neighboring Sahelian countries, particularly Mali, a strategic farming partner.
