For the attention of Mr. BIRAME SOULEYE DIOP
Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines
Republic of Senegal
Subject: Advocacy for taking into account the environmental impacts caused by ICS on our village of Ndiaye Sagnakhor / Ndiaye Samba Nar
Minister,
We, residents of the village of Ndiaye Sagnakhor / Ndiaye Samba Nar, located in the town of Pire Goureye, department of Tivaouane, we very respectfully come to your attention an extremely worrying situation which seriously compromises our health, our environment and our quality of life.
Our village is located less than a kilometer from the operating site of the Senegal chemical industry (ICS). This proximity directly exposes our population to the harmful effects of industrial activities, with heavy consequences:
Public health: We observe a significant increase in respiratory diseases, skin, as well as other health problems linked to pollution that was not observed before.
Agricultural production: soil fertility is in sharp degradation, trees decline, and agricultural yields have become extremely low.
Water quality: our main source of water, traditional wells, is seriously affected, endangering the hygiene and health of our families.
Aware of the national economic issues linked to ICS activities, we do not oppose a possible displacement (move) of our community if the necessary conditions are met.
We ask you, Mr. Minister, so that urgent measures are taken to protect the fundamental rights of our population and ensure a fair and lasting solution in consultation with all the parties concerned.
Please accept, Minister, the expression of our very high consideration.
For the inhabitants of Ndiaye Sagnakhor / Ndiaye Samba Nar
