It was with great emotion that the Minister of Sports, Khady Diene Gaye, reacted to the announcement of the death of Joseph Mathiam, former Minister of Sports in Senegal. Emblematic figure of public engagement in favor of youth and sport, he leaves behind a strong and lasting heritage.

“Senegal loses with him a great servant of the nation”, said the minister, paying tribute to a man whose action has marked several generations.

Appointed in the 1970s by President Léopold Sédar Senghor, Joseph Mathiam distinguished himself by structuring initiatives: the holding of the Estates General of Sport at the Blaise Diagne stadium, the promotion of national youth and culture weeks, as well as the revival of the National Youth Council. His commitment helped place youth at the heart of Senegalese public policies.

On her Facebook page, the minister praised “A remarkable course and a constant commitment to Senegal’s leadership on the international scene”before sending their most sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, their loved ones, as well as the whole nation.
