- Thousands of Vaudois students will pass the ECR between May 5 and 13.
- ECR results count for 30% of the annual final average in 8e.
- Some students take private lessons to improve their grades.
- The cantonal average of the results has been stable since 2019 despite the disparities.
Is the calculation 4 x 45 x 2 equal to 8 x 90? This was one of the questions on which the students of 8e when Reference cantonal tests (ECR) of 2023. In the Vaudois school system, these uniform tests throughout the canton take place at the end of 4e (students aged 7), 6e (9 years) and 8e (12 ans).
This year, they will take place from May 5 to 13, said On its site the General Directorate of Compulsory Education. Next to 26,000 students will participate. For the canton, these tests are above all a way to assess if the level is harmonized throughout the territory. But for families, especially those with children in 8eECRs are often a source of stress.
Intensive revisions during the holidays
“The teachers told us about these ECRs from the start of the school yearelast year, explains a Lausannoise, whose daughter will work on the ECR of 8e Next week. It is a huge pressure from the school, but also of society. We have the impression that if we do not go into a pregymal, we are a failure. It is not normal to have this level of requirement with children of 11 years old! ”
At the end of the 8ethe student will obtain an average, made with its results at ECR (counting for 30%) and those obtained throughout the year (70%). To go into a pregymnasial process (VP), he will notably have to reach fifteen points in French, math and German, as summarizes this official document. A goal sometimes difficult to achieve. This mother, who prefers to keep anonymity, therefore paid private lessons to her daughter to help her in her schooling. In addition to a rehearsal who comes regularly, she registered it for a week of revisions for the ECR, during the Easter holidays. “It is especially for math that my daughter needs help,” she adds.
-Several school support companies
To help her daughter, this Lausannoise called on the Cogito company. This company specializing in tutoring, which has offices in Geneva, Lausanne and Berne, helps around fifty young students each year a successea slightly increased figure. “For students who have difficulties, the ECRs are decisive,” explains its director, François Simon. This is why we offer duration support, because it is useless to do an intensive internship the previous week, if we accumulate bad grades all year round. ”
Cogito is not the only company to offer such support. In the canton, many of them develop the offer, such as FuturPlus or the Mathared company. Preparations for ECRs of 8e represent some 10% of the total of the latter’s students, based in Pully. “These are around thirty students who have mostly opted for year support,” notes its director, Jean-Marc Liechti. Most want fifteen points to switch to VP and are a bit fair. The general route (VG) has a bad reputation. “
Stable cantonal average
For the canton, the fact that some families use private lessons so that children succeed in their RCCs is not new. “These training courses have existed for several years and do not fundamentally differ from other private tutoring offers. Some parents choose to use it to complete the measures implemented by the public school and it is their right, “replies Hélène Jost, communications officer in the Department of Education and Vocational Training.
She adds: “The teaching staff has the most appropriate resources and information to prepare students for ECRs during the year and even throughout the school career.” In a arrest filed in 2018Vassilis Venizelos, who was then a green deputy for the Grand Council, evoked the flourishing “business” of the support courses for the ECR. The canton had replied that the Vaudois school system was doing “everything to ensure equal opportunities and equity between all the students of the canton”.
Following a request for “24 hours”, the canton has now rendered the results to the ecr. These show disparities according to the establishments. But the cantonal average has been more or less stable since 2019.
