Morocco is close to receiving a historic load of 60,000 tonnes of cereals from Kazakhstan, marking a significant step in trade relations between the two countries. This first shipment, made up of 3rd and 4th category wheat, was sent on April 30 from the railway stations of Zhana-Yesyil and Sarykol to Kazakhstan, passing through Latvia before being sent by sea to the kingdom.

This import intervenes in a context where Morocco seeks to diversify its sources of cereal supply to strengthen its food security. The country has been faced with agricultural challenges in recent years, including production reductions due to unfavorable climatic conditions. In 2024, Moroccan cereal production experienced a 62 %increase, reaching 5.5 million tonnes, but remains insufficient to cover national demand.

Kazakhstan, as the main cereal producer in Central Asia, recorded an exceptional harvest in 2024, with 26.7 million tonnes of cereals, the largest in 13 years. This abundance has enabled the country to increase its exports, especially to new markets such as Morocco.

The Kazakh authorities have expressed their intention to export more than 300,000 tonnes of wheat to North Africa, including a significant part intended in Morocco, by the end of the current commercial season. This initiative is part of a broader strategy for diversifying Kazakhstan export markets, aimed at strengthening its presence in the Middle East regions, North Africa and Southeast Asia.
