To ensure this distribution to the various audiences, the ARS is based on a network of proximity actors: maternal and child protection centers (PMI) under the department, maternity, home care services, nursing homes and care for care.
This May 2, 2025, Gérard COOLLON, Director General of ARS and Cyrille Melchior, president of the departmental council, went to the center of PMI of Saint-Paul, where they gave mosquito nets to pregnant women and parents of infants.
Effective protective measure against chikungunya
The use of mosquito nets is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from chikungunya. Installed on beds, cradles or strollers, mosquito nets protect mosquito stings vectors of the disease. This is particularly concerned:
- pregnant women, throughout their pregnancy, and more particularly during the last quarter where there are risks of transmission to the unborn child;
- newborns and infants;
- people over the age of 65.
The use of mosquito nets is complementary to the other necessary protection gestures (elimination of larval lodgings around his home, wearing long and covering clothing, use of repulsive adapted to age).
In order to strengthen the protection of people at risk at their home, the ARS distributes nearly 25,000 mosquito nets for infants and adults free of charge, which are given through local partners:
- The 7 maternity of the island
- The 25 infantile maternal protection centers (PMI)
- Home nursing services (SSIAD) and accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (EHPAD)
- Holidays access to health care (PASS)
- The French Red Cross, which distributes to the CCAS of the island.
To date, 302 people have been hospitalized for chikungunya reasons:
- Almost half were people over the age of 65,
- 65 pregnant women,
- 46 infants were hospitalized in a pediatric intensive care service or neonatal resuscitation, including 21 infants for serious forms of the disease.
Possible anti -vetoral control actions at the home of pregnant women and children
Faced with the evolution of the epidemic, the ARS anti -clue control service offers interventions at the home of pregnant women, infants or the elderly with comorbidities, at the request of services ensuring the follow -up of these audiences (maternity, PMI, PASS, CCAS) and in agreement with the persons concerned.
These interventions consist of making a diagnosis, raising awareness of people on the right gestures, and if necessary carry out insecticide treatment around the house and in the vicinity in order to eliminate mosquitoes.
Other means of protection
- The use of anti-mosquito repellents: suitable products exist for pregnant women and infants. Ask your pharmacist for advice.
- The installation of mosquito nets at the doors and windows.
- wearing long and covering clothes;
- the elimination of stagnant waters (laying places of mosquitoes) at home.
