Google wishes to make image editing accessible to everyone, by transforming it into child’s play. The Mountain View firm announced the integration on Wednesday, within its Gemini application (its own generative AI), of a new image editing feature. It allows you to easily modify, using a simple textual query, both creations generated by AI and images downloaded from the smartphone or a computer. “You can change the background, replace objects, add elements, etc.”, explains Google on its blog. The web giant illustrates this ability with the example of a dog photo to which we added a hat, while replacing grass background with a beach.

Another possibility: “You can download a personal photo and ask Gemini to generate an image of you with different hair colors,” says the American company.

Beyond the simple touch-up, this editing capacity also makes it possible to enrich the responses provided by AI by combining text and visuals. “For example, you can ask Gemini to write a first draft of a children’s story on dragons at bedtime, accompanied by illustrations,” says Google.

The images created or modified thanks to the native generation of images of Gemini will be equipped with an invisible digital watermark, Synthid. As a reminder, developed by Google Deepmind, this technology makes it possible to identify the content generated by AI, for the sake of transparency.

Google, which with this announcement strengthens competition in the face of Chatgpt features, specifies that the image editing feature is gradually deployed and will be available in “more than 45 languages and most countries in the coming weeks”.
