Swiss rail development is facing major challenges, with delays and significant additional costs, particularly in French -speaking Switzerland. Faced with these problems, Federal Councilor Albert Rösti has mandated the EPFZ to establish an analysis of priorities.

In his Annual report published Fridaythe Federal Transport Office (OFT) notes that the increase in the number of travelers and the density of the network makes work more and more difficult.

Several projects accuse delays, notably on the Lake Geneva Arc and elsewhere in French -speaking Switzerland. A striking example is the direct connection between Neuchâtel and La Chaux-de-Fonds, now planned for 2041.

Nearly 14 billion francs in additional costs

The expected additional costs are considerable, reaching 14 billion francs in total by 2035. Among the projects concerned is the new double -track line of 15 kilometers between Morges and Perroy.

The work at Lausanne station is also on the list, as revealed by the RTS in 2023. The delay in the site had caused the ire of the Vaud authorities.

Sent from the EPFZ

Faced with this situation, the federal adviser in charge of transport, Albert Rösti (UDC/BE), decided to establish priorities. He mandated the Zurich Federal Polytechnic School to conduct an analysis, the results of which are expected at the end of the year.

Despite these difficulties, the OFT annual report stresses that some projects are advancing as planned or was completed last year. This is the case of the new underground pedestrian crossing at the Friborg station, inaugurated in September.
