It has been more than 50 days that Israel applies a total blockade for international aid for the 2.4 million Palestinians of the Gaza Strip, where famine threatens. It is in this context that the International Court of Justice (CIJ) has been trying to clarify the obligations of Israel since Monday to the international community to “ensure and facilitate unhindered delivery of urgent supplies essential to the survival of the civilian population”. On the last day of the Auditions of the States, it was the turn of Switzerland to speak on Friday morning in The Hague.
Like all stakeholders, the Swiss ambassador Franz Perrez began by recalling the duty of the member states to attend the UN, its subsidiary bodies and its agencies in their missions in agreement with the organization charter. As such, the Director of the Division of Public International Law indicated that “Israel, as an occupying power, has the obligation to consent to rescue actions in favor of this population and to take all the necessary and effective measures to ensure them”.
