- The program includes the projection of a documentary on adaptation to senior spaces.
The University of Geneva must be at the service of the city, it is one of its great leitmotifs. To do this, she organizes many events in order to interest civil society in her research and activities. Since March, the Faculty of Social Sciences has offered public and master students a forum called “Spaces and materialities of aging».
“Aging at home”
On the program: conferences on the challenges of aging in given spaces, a neighborhood, a large building or in the mountains, for example. Faced with the aging of the population and the increase in health costs, the conditions that support “aging at home” are now at the heart of home support policies. The subject therefore seemed particularly relevant for the Institute of Sociological Research of Unige and Geneva senior network platformcoorganisatrice.
“In the studies of aging, attention is often around the body, on the loss of faculties, on the question of caregivers or social ties, observes Cornelia Hummel, professor in the Department of Sociology of the University of Geneva. The elderly live in a space world, in a set of buildings, in a mountain village or in an intermediate habitat. However, materiality and spatiality are not very much studied in the social sciences. ”
A cycle of eight conferences was therefore organized during Spring Wednesdays. Three interventions, as well as the projection of a documentary, are still scheduled in May. “Living is aging” will be screened on May 28. In this film, filmmaker Blandine Delcroix follows her mother’s end of life until she entered EMS, her last home. “We are witnessing the displacement both of the person and his objects from the apartment in his neighborhood at the residence for the elderly. The space is gradually reduced during great old age, ”notes Cornelia Hummel
Land and research
The will of the forum organizers is to mix researchers with people on the ground. For example, during the evening devoted to large complexes, an architect and a delegate for seniors intervened the same evening.
On May 7, a French researcher will present her work on the residential trajectory over the age of the age. On the 14th, a Neuchâtel researcher will tackle the challenges of migration and transnational mobility, that experienced by retired pendulum that worked in Switzerland by living in France.
The evening of May 21 will deal with architecture at the service of the reception of elders in EMS, with an architect and the Geneva Federation of Medico-Social establishments (Fegems). Conferences take place at 6:15 p.m., in Uni Mail, on the ground floor, room MR170.
