The three Swiss social insurance that are AVS, AI and APG have completed 2024 on profits. These positive operating results are due to the good performance of the financial markets last year, according to the Compenswisswiss organization.

Old -age and survivors (AVS) insurance finished on a positive distribution result of 2.8 billion francs, reported on Thursday, the organization which manages the AVS/AI/APG compensation funds. In the end, it presented a profit of 5.6 billion at the end of 2024 (2.9 billion a year earlier).

Several reasons explain this difference. First of all, even if AVS products and charges increased compared to 2023, the products have exceeded the charges. This situation is largely due to the increase in VAT following the AVS21 reform (normal rate from 7.7% to 8.1%).

Then the AVS received interest on its debt, up to 216 million. Finally, the financial markets positively impacted the performance of the AVS compensation fund (2.6 billion).

AI debt to the unchanged AVS

The good situation in the financial markets also had a positive effect for invalidity insurance (AI), which completed 2024 with a profit of 235 million (206 million at the end of 2023). Its results of the investments of 254 million compensates for its negative distribution result of 19 million.

However, this benefit does not, once again, reduce AI debt to AVS. This debt remains unchanged since 2018 at 10.3 billion.

As for the regime for gains allowance (APG), it finished exercise 2024 on a positive distribution result of 196 million. Also thanks to a good result of financial investments (125 million), its profit reached 321 million at the end of last year (246 million in the previous year).
