The Vaudois won 6-4 6-4 in front of the Croatian Borna Gojo (ATP 353) Saturday in the semi-final on the Aix clay. He can become the first forty -year -old in history on Sunday to win a challenger!
Admittedly, it is “only” the Challenger circuit. Still, Stan Wawrinka once again demonstrated that his motivation was intact. He has not played a final since the end of July 2023, when he had bowed at this stage of the competition in the ATP 250 of Umag against Australian Alexei Popyrin.
The triple winner of Grand Chelem, who came out Popyrin (ATP 26) in the 2nd round Thursday, targets an eighth trophy on the Challengers front. His last coronation in a tournament in this category dates back to August 2020, in Prague, where he returned after the circuit had paused due to the pandemic of Covid-19.
On Saturday, Stan Wawrinka mastered his subject against Borna Gojo, which he had crushed 6-2 6-3 in the challenger of Naples. He will find on Sunday in the final another Croatian Borna, the former world No. 12 Borna Coric (ATP 104), which he also beat in Naples in late March, and on the same score which is more! If he won, the Vaudois would find himself around 115th place in the ATP ranking.
