The English Football Federation (FA) has announced that Transgender women will no longer be allowed to participate in women’s football competitions in England from June.
This decision follows a judgment of the British Supreme Court rendered last month, in which the highest legal body in the country declares that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the equality law refers to “A biological woman and a biological sex”.
Following this judgment, the FA was invited by its lawyers to modify its previous policy, which so far authorized transgender women to participate in women’s football competitions.
In a statement published Thursday, The English Football Federation indicated that it had always been willing to review its position “In the event of material change of the law”.
“The decision of the Supreme Court of April 16 means that we will change our policy”confirmed the FA. “Transgender women will no longer be able to play in women’s football in England, and this policy will be implemented from June 1, 2025”.
-The FA indicated thatShe would directly contact all the transgender women affected by this decision to “Explain the changes to them” And allow them to continue to practice their sport in another way.
This decision is barely a month after the FA decided that transgender women could continue to play women’s football provided that their testosterone levels are less than five nmol/l for at least a year.
The controversial decision of the British Supreme Court has upset years of policies and has been criticized by numerous rights defense groups.
A former transgender judge plans to appeal before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
Victoria McCloud, who proved to be transgender in the 1990s and became a judge in 2006, told Euronews that the judgment made life “Impossible for people like [elle]“.
