In a resounding decision, the Trump administration proposed to completely remove the American funding allocated to the African Development Fund (FAD), the Concessional Window of the African Development Bank (BAD).
In the 2026 budget submitted to the congress, this cut is justified by disalcuration with “administration priorities”. A total of $ 555 million intended for African multilateral institutions, including the AfDB, are concerned.
The Executive intends to redirect American aid to investments deemed more profitable via the DFC (US International Development Finance Corporation), to the detriment of climate, equality or governance funding, qualified as “radical” or “ideological”.
This decision is likely to dig a major deficit in the financing of vital projects in sub -Saharan Africa, especially in the fields of agriculture, infrastructure, health and the fight against climate change. It also weakens the strategic influence of the United States in the development policies of the African continent, at a time when funding needs have never been so critical.
