It is ultimately the Bloc Québécois who won the district of Terrebonne with 44 votes in advance after a final verification by the director of the ballot. The suspense is still not finished, because a judicial count will take place.

With 23,340 votes, deputy Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné has the upper hand over her liberal rival Tatiana Auguste, who has 23,296.

This is a turnaround: Ms. Auguste had received 35 more votes during a first count, but errors in the addition of total cumulative totals would have distorted the situation.

“We are waiting for the judicial count to open champagne, but it is auspicious,” said the blocist deputy in telephone interview, who admits not having slept much since Monday.

Automatic judicial count should start in the middle or end of next week, according to Ms Sinclair-Desgagné. The results should be known within one to three days after the start of the count.

“Of course I would have preferred not to be in this position, but we worked so much. As Yves-François said [Blanchet]many of us have retained a wave with our hands, and I have the impression that it is really true in the case of Terrebonne, “continues the deputy.

Judicial remains take place when the difference in voting between the two candidates in the lead is less than the thousandth of the total of the votes expressed. The difference in 44 votes separating the candidates is slim enough to trigger this process provided by law.

These installments take place under the supervision of a judge and involve in particular the participation of lawyers, candidates and the director of the ballot among others.

If the result is confirmed, this would bring the liberals back to 168 seats and distance the government of Mark Carney from the required threshold for the majority, fixed at 172.

Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné was elected in Terrebonne for the first time in the 2021 elections.
