The historical and archaeological heritage of Salé was the subject of a scientific conference, held Wednesday April 30 in Rabat, at the end of the exhibition “Sala, hidden treasures of an ancient Moroccan city”, welcomed since October by the Museum of Bank Al-Maghrib.
Organized as part of the cultural program accompanying the exhibition, the conference aimed to reveal to the public the often unknown dimensions of the history of Salé, through coins, rare archaeological objects and carefully selected archives. Specialists have presented scientific approaches retracing the evolution of this ancient city.
Among the stakeholders were Rachid Maalal, director general of the company Rabat Région Historique Patrimoine (RRPH), Mohamed Kbiri Alaoui, professor at the National Institute of Sciences of Archeology and Heritage, and Smahane Bouktab, head of numismatic studies in the museum.
Ms. Bouktab explained that this exhibition is part of the museum’s scientific approach, which aims to reveal the major civilizational stages of Moroccan cities. The choice of Salé, she said, is explained by its structuring role in the formation of the country’s historical identity. The exhibition highlights two major periods: the Maurétanienne and Mauretano-Roman.
Rachid Maalal, for his part, highlighted the efforts to enhance the ancient site of Salé, stressing its importance as an architectural witness of several millennia of history. He insisted on the need to integrate it into the local cultural and tourist fabric, while continuing the research to document and preserve his inheritance.
As for Mohamed Kbiri Alaoui, he described salted as a real “open -air laboratory”, pleading for an increased investment in its archaeological richness in order to enrich the knowledge on the economic, social and cultural dynamics of the city through the ages.
This conference confirms the will of the museum of Bank Al-Maghrib to make its spaces a place of reflection around the history of Morocco, through scientific initiatives dedicated to the valuation of the national intangible heritage.
