The murderer of a 6-year-old Palestinian-American child was sentenced on Friday to 53 years in prison by an Illinois court in the northeast of the United States.
The Will’s county court had recognized in February Joseph Czuba, 73, in particular guilty of murder with premeditation and crime motivated by racial hatred. The crime had been committed a week after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, in October 2023.
He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of the child, 20 years old for the attempted murder of his mother and three years for the racial motivation of his actions. He was convicted of having stabbed his tenants, Hanan Shaheen, 32 at the time of the facts, who survived, and his son, Wadea al-Fayoumi, 6, who died in the hospital on October 14, 2023 near Chicago.
In detention since the murder, Joseph Czuba had pleaded not guilty of the eight charges. The two victims “were targeted by the suspect because they are Muslim and due to the current conflict in the Middle East involving Hamas and the Israelis,” said the police, adding that the boy had received 26 stab wounds.
During the autopsy, a military knife served with a 15 cm blade was removed from the child’s abdomen. US President Joe Biden had sentenced a “horrible deed”, which “has no place in America on October 15, 2023.
