The workers’ union, Unifor, calls for rapid action while GM reduces its team due to customs tariffs.
“Unifor requires immediate measures after General Motors’ announcement to reduce the activities of its Oshawa assembly plant, which will go from three to two -quarters of work this fall,” said a statement published by the union on Friday, which invokes the prices imposed by Donald Trump.
“We will not let GM sacrifice Canadian jobs to please Donald Trump,” said Lana Payne, National President of Unifor.
-“Remove the third quarter in Oshawa is an irresponsible decision, which strikes our members full and threatens the entire network of automotive parts suppliers. GM must backtrack before the damage worsens, ”she continues.
This decision occurs shortly after Trump’s taxation of a 25% rate on vehicles manufactured in Canada, a measure that sowed uncertainty in the Canadian automotive sector. In three weeks, GM announced measures that will cause the permanent dismissal of almost 30% of its hourly workers in Canada, according to the union.
The Oshawa factory assembles light and heavy Chevrolet Silverado trucks for the North American market, models also produced in the United States and Mexico.
Doug Ford reacts
Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford reacted to the news on his X account.
“Today’s news from GM are extremely difficult for workers in Oshawa and their families. These are dedicated people who have helped build the Ontario automotive industry. GM reaffirmed its commitment to the Oshawa factory, which will continue to produce trucks made in Ontario for the coming years. We will continue to do everything to support the future of this installation and its workers. ” he wrote.
