In Belgium, the magistrates at war with the government of Bart de Wever

It was up to years since they protested in vain, against the dilapidation of the judiciary, but since a mobilization which took place on March 20 before the offices of the Minister of Justice, the Belgian magistrates openly declared war on the federal government led by the Flemish nationalist Bart de Wever. The government’s compromise of February 12 includes a project of pension reforms which Minister Jan Jambon, member, like the Prime Minister, of the Neoflamande Alliance intends to fully apply. His decision to plane pensions from the judicial world will have been “The drop that overflowed the vaseexplace manima Candelli, Juge in Namt and Musical Eystician des Magistrats. We have scruples to fight on such a subject but at the end of the insult to us, there were no other solutions ”.

According to judges and prosecutors, the reform could lead to a reduction of 30 % to 40 % of their retirement, which Minister Jambon disputes without however putting forward his own estimate. The withdrawal of his project is not, and by far, the only claim of a movement which brings together for the first time the whole profession. The magistrates denounce pell-mell a lack of workforce never resolved-in certain judicial districts it reaches 40 %-, the dilapidation of many buildings, the gaps of an obsolete computer system. And insufficient budgets that make experts and translators are paid with months of delay while places in psychiatric services or reception for young delinquents are lacking.
