According to Miroslav Novák, if the discovery of such an important booty is extremely rare, his age is also very unusual. While this type of deposit, made for ritual purposes or in periods of war, generally dates back to antiquity or the Middle Ages, the examination of the documents indicates that it was concealed during the 20th century.
-Unexpected assembly
The pieces came from France, Austria-Hungary, Belgium and the Ottoman Empire. Unexpectedly, none has been struck in Germany or Czechoslovakia, thickening the mystery around the identity of the individual who hid them in the Czech countryside.
If the period they cover extends mainly from 1808 to 1915, several of them present discreet countermarks suggesting that they have been reframed in the territories of the former socialist republic of Yugoslavia (which included Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia) during the years 1930 or 1940.
The Czech Republic having experienced its share of conflicts during the last century, the analysis of archive documents concerning the region could shed light on the context in which this unusual deposit was carried out.
