After gas, Algeria wants to export electricity to Europe

Algeria wants to change role in the European energy landscape. After years of providing gas, the country is now focusing on electricity export. This new strategy is based on a strong surplus production and interconnection projects with Europe, in particular Italy and Spain.

In 2024, Algeria produced 25 gigawatts of electricity. Of this total, 10 gigawatts are available continuously for export. This level of production is the result of several years of investment in the electricity network and power plants. The country has already started to sell electricity to Tunisia. Libya is also on the list. Europe is now the next target.

Italy and Spain online in sight

Algeria wants to connect directly to the European network. A submarine cable project between Algeria and Italy is underway. He moves forward quickly. The idea is simple: connect the two networks to allow Algerian electricity to reach the European market. A similar project is studied with Spain.

Clean energy adapted to expectations

The majority of electricity available for export in Algeria is produced without CO₂ emissions. This corresponds to the expectations of European countries, which want to reduce their environmental impact. Algeria also develops new projects to go further on this path. It provides 15 gigawatts of solar energy and 5 wind gigawatts by 2035.

In addition to electricity, the country works on green hydrogen. Agreements are in preparation with Germany, Italy and Austria. The objective is to offer Europe a clean energy, produced locally, and easy to transport.

Algeria no longer wants to be limited to gas

Algeria no longer wants to be limited to gas. It seeks to diversify its exports and become a major player in the energy transition in the Mediterranean. This involves modernized infrastructure, increasing production and greener offer.

The current connections with Europe could transform the role of the country on the market. If the projects lead, Algeria could directly supply part of Europe with electricity, in a stable and continuous manner. This change of course shows that Algeria does not want to undergo changes in the energy market. She wants to be part of it and propose concrete solutions, adapted to the current needs of the European continent.
