The long telephone exchange that the American and Russian presidents did not have produced the effect that Donald Trump hoped, namely an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. In his electoral campaign, the republican candidate had boasted that he would only need 24 hours to make peace in Ukraine. Trump dreams of obtaining the Nobel Peace Prize, a distinction that Obama had obtained without making peace anywhere.

It seems that Vladimir Putin is not ready to give this gift to his American counterpart. Feeling that his troops are on the rise after their reconquest of the salient of Koursk, the Russian president drags his feet to concede an immediate ceasefire. He believes that his military situation will be, in a month or two, better than it is today.
