US President Donald Trump sparked a wave of criticism after sharing an image created by artificial intelligence representing the pontifical clothes. The photo, broadcast without explanation on its social network Truth Social then relayed on its Twitter presidential account, shows Trump seated on the papal throne, finger raised as a sign of authority. This publication occurs only a few days after a controversial declaration by the president. Questioned by journalists on the lawn of the White House about who he would like to see Pope Francis replace, Trump had replied: “I would like to be a pope. It would be my first choice.”

The image quickly accumulated tens of thousands of “likes” but also caused many negative reactions. “Disgusting”, “disturbing”, “disrespectful” and “offensive” are among the qualifiers employed by unhappy Internet users. Even among his supporters, the assembly has aroused indignation. “I like Trump but I find his meme on the disrespectful and insulting pope. We should not make fun of God,” said a user. Another added: “Please withdraw this publication. Many Catholics, of which myself see a great lack of respect for the past and future church church.” The White House has not yet officially reacted to this controversy which is added to a long list of controversies linked to the president’s digital communications.
