“There are times when I would like the season to be shorter”

Qualified for the Masters 1000 final in Madrid, Casper Ruud finally hopes to win a title in this tournament category after two failures in Miami and Monte-Carlo.

At a press conference, the Norwegian took the time to answer the questions and problems surrounding the current calendar. Like some of his peers, he would like changes:

“When you see everyone playing every week or do a full season, you force yourself a little to do it too. There are obviously days and times when I would like the season to be shorter. I would like us to have more time to rest and not think of tennis. But this is not the case and the calendar is like that.

If you finish the season in the top 30, there are 28 or 29 weeks of compulsory competitions to play the following year. There are the big chelems that count for eight weeks. Then seven of the nine Masters 1000 are now played over two weeks. And finally, five ATP 500 must be played during the year.

If you do not present yourself to these tests, the sanctions can be quite severe. Players are starting to feel that it’s a little too much. I can’t speak for everyone, but I felt it for my side. »»
