- Han Duck-Soo undertakes to serve the Republic of Korea and to request the mandate of the people despite the complications linked to the eligibility of the left candidate Lee Jae-Myung.
- The Supreme Court cancels Lee Jae-Myung’s acquittal for violation of the electoral law, which could disqualify it from the race.
The South Korean political landscape has experienced a new change when the Minister of Education Lee Ju-Ho assumed the role of acting president, marking the third appointment of this type in less than six months. This transition follows the resignation of former Prime Minister Han Duck-Soo, who decided to apply for the June 3 elections to replace former President Yoon Suk-Yeol, who was dismissed.
Lee Ju-Ho stressed his commitment to ensuring government stability during his mandate as an acting leader. Han Duck-Soo’s decision to enter the race has complicated an already uncertain election, characterized by questions surrounding the eligibility of Lee Jae-Myung, the left favorite of the Democratic Party. Han expressed his desire to serve the Republic of Korea and undertook to request the mandate of the people during the next presidential election.
The leader in Jae-Myung polls entangled in electoral laws
To add to the complexity of the situation, the Supreme Court has canceled Lee Jae-Myung’s acquittal for violation of the electoral law, referring the case for re-examining by a lower court. If Lee Jae-Myung was sentenced before the elections, he could be disqualified in the race despite his constant advance in opinion polls.
- The June election was launched by the dismissal of Yoon Suk-Yol following his controversial declaration of martial law in December.
Although this declaration lasted less than six hours and was quickly canceled by the South Korean legislative body, its repercussions continue to be felt in the country’s political sphere almost six months later. Han Duck-SOO first assumed the role of acting president after the dismissal of Yoon Suk-Yeol on December 14, but he was then dismissed and replaced by the Minister of Finance Choi Sang-Mok.
Key actors
An experienced politician and bureaucrat, Han Duck-SOO held important positions in liberal and conservative administrations, notably as Prime Minister, Minister of Commerce, Minister of Finance and Ambassador to the United States. Although it is not affiliated with a political party, it is expected to align with the conservative party People Power by Yoon Suk-Yeol.
- Its campaign program will probably focus on the limitation of executive power and the modification of the constitution in order to establish a more solid control and balance system.
After the announcement of Han Duck-Soo’s candidacy, the Democratic Party criticized him for neglecting his caretaker’s duties and accused him of masking a personal ambition under the cover of the public service.
