After a strong earthquake in front of the southern tip of South America, hundreds of people were temporarily evacuated in Chile because of the risk of tsunami. The warning was lifted a few hours later.
The quake of the strength 7.4 occurred around 220 kilometers south of Ushuaia – the southernmost city of Argentina in Tierra del Fuego. According to the US-earthquake, USGS, it was easy or moderate in the Magellan region and the Chilean Antarctic.
“There are no critical infrastructures or people,” said the deputy director of the National Service for Disaster Prevention Senapred, Miguel Ortiz. Even if the authorities no longer count on large harmful waves, the authorities called on people to continue to keep themselves away from the coast.
Call to evacuate set
Immediately after the quake, President Gabriel Boric asked the population in the region via platform X to get to safety. The all -clear came around two hours later.
The government representative for Magellans, José Antonio Ruiz, said that the first waves that had reached Antarctic stations were not as high as feared. As the TV station reported 24 Horas, the waves were only between 20 and 30 centimeters higher than before the tremor. The call for evacuation was then discontinued. “You can return to your houses and your jobs,” said Ruiz.
The largest city in the southernmost part of Chile is Punta Arenas with around 127,000 inhabitants. Earthquakes are not common in the region, said Mayor of Punta Arenas, Claudio Radonich.
After the initial tsunami warning, around 30 people were brought to safety in the Antarctic research stations Arturo Prat and Bernardo O’Higgins, as Senapred said.
The center of the quake was in the Drakestrasse
The National Seismology Center Chiles indicated the earthquake strength with 7.5, somewhat heavier than the US earthquake. Afterskin was also registered.
According to the USGS, the center of the quake was 219 kilometers south of Ushuaia at a depth of ten kilometers. The center of the quake was in the Drakestrasse, a sea route between the southernmost point in South America and the Antarctic.
