Around 11 a.m., the Richelieu-Saint-Laurent police service received several calls signaling an overturned plane in the Richelieu river. The municipality’s fire services were dispatched to the scene to help the victims on board.
The accident occurred at the Robert climb, specifies Sergeant Jean-Luc Tremblay, spokesperson for the Intermunicipal Régie de police Richelieu-Saint-Laurent.
Police report one of the two men aboard the plane managed to get out of the aircraft after crushing. He joined the swimming bank, where he was taken care of by the ambulance services, while the other occupant remained stuck inside the plane.
Around 2:45 p.m., the police confirmed that the man caught in the aircraft was evacuated and transported to a hospital center. His death was later noted at the hospital center, according to the Sergente de la Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Laurie Avoine.
Route 223 near McMasterville was blocked to Saint-Basile-le-Grand and criminal investigators went to the scene, although no “element of a criminal nature has been observed for the moment,” said Sergeant Tremblay.
The Canada Transport Safety Office has also opened an investigation to understand the circumstances of the accident. Investigators in the SQ’s major crime surveys were also dispatched to the scene.
“All hypotheses are on the table,” says Sergeant Tremblay
