An outing in the mountains turned to drama this Thursday in the heights of Bidarray, in the Basque Country. An 80 -year -old hiker, a member of an association of walkers in Bayonne, died after a fall of almost a hundred meters on a steep path.
The victim, a regular at the region’s trails, participated in a group hike in a GR10 sector known to be difficult but accessible without professional supervision. As the Parisian relates, the group had started in the morning, around 9 am, and it was on the way back, around 3 p.m., on the Peñas d’Isusi path, that the accident occurred.
According to the first elements reported in here Basque Country, the hiker would have dropped before the eyes of her companions. The rapid intervention of rescue in the perilous environment, accompanied by a mountain doctor, did not allow it to revive it: it had died instantly.
Two other members of the association, very shocked by the scene and unable to move, were also taken care of by the emergency services. They were transported to their vehicle below.
An investigation was opened by the Oloron-Sainte-Marie high mountain gendarmerie (PGHM) to determine the precise circumstances of this tragic accident.
