What are the rechargeable hybrid volvo recalled for a risk of fire in France?

Faced with the fairly sluggish takeoff of electric vehicle sales, Volvo will keep hybrid cars rechargeable in its range longer than expected. But some of them are currently summoned to the garage as part of a security reminder. This operation affects both S60, V60 and XC60 and S90, V90 and XC90. The common point between all these models? They share the same potential problem, linked to a risk of fire starting, and they all rest on the SPA platform.

If he is a manufacturer whose image is associated with security, it is Volvo. But to maintain this reputation, obtaining good results at the crash-test and offering aid with sophisticated driving is not enough. It is also important to react quickly when potential risks are identified on vehicles delivered to customers. The Swedish brand is aware of this, and it rarely relies to organize reminders. The recent ex90 has already been the subject of a first correction a few weeks ago following unexpected lighthouses.

What vehicles are affected by the Volvo Code R10132 recall?

The latest return to workshop campaign has the code R10312. It only affects the most imposing and expensive rechargeable hybrid models, built on the Spa platform (Scalable Product Architecture).

All the cars recalled were manufactured on a beach between April 29, 2019 and December 1, 2021 according to the Ministry of German Transport KBA. The list is quite long:

In the world, this would represent no less than 59,271 vehicles, according to the same source. But in France, Volvo’s communication service has not surprised us a much more modest number. He evokes 3,167 cars in total which will have to go back to the garage. Their owners will be notified by a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, in which they will be asked to make an appointment in the workshop. On the other hand, the manufacturer does not offer an online tool to check if its vehicle is the subject of a recall in France, unlike many other brands.

This operation is linked to the detection of a risk of overheating one or more high voltage battery cell modules when loaded at 100 %, which can go up to an internal fire to this accumulator. The problem is therefore not to be taken lightly, even if the reminders due to potential fire today are very numerous whatever the type of engine. To correct the shot, Volvo starts first by checking the battery cell modules. If this inspection does not detect anything abnormal, 25 minutes of intervention should be enough by including a software update. But in some cases, it may be necessary to replace one or more defective battery modules, which can take until 5:30 a.m. Fortunately, this operation that is both complex and expensive will remain the responsibility of the manufacturer, as provided for in the legislation when security is at stake. No worries, so, if your car has come out of the warranty period.

According to Volvo, the risk of fire is only present when the battery is 100 %loaded.© Volvo
