Released on Wednesday April 30 at Cinécity, “promise” traces the history of Laurène Hug de Larauze, a young student who died of leukemia. Directed by his twin brother Thomas Hug de Larauze, the documentary rekindled the memories of Morgan Bellec, from Bourail, which Laurène did not leave indifferent.
Eight years after the death of his twin sister, Thomas Hug de Larauze realizes the “promise” they had made: make a film with sequences shot in their daily lives.
On the images, Morgan Bellec appears, she is a friend of Laurène. They met at the Catholic University of Anger in 2012, where Morgan was studying psychology. Far from her island, she feels isolated, until Lauren’s meeting.
She takes me under her wing, treats me like her sister
Morgan remembers generosity and “Pacific heart” Laurène, and especially the strength with which the girl was fighting the disease. Taken by emotion, Morgan confides “That being with her was feeling to exist”. Photos, memories, emotions, the Caledonian has kept almost everything from her friend.
When the two young girls meet in 2012, Laurène has already been fighting against the disease for four years. “With her I really understood what the present moment is to live”Morgan shows tears in his eyes. Laurène will die 2 years later.
With her twin brother Thomas, Laurène films some moments of her daily life. It is nine years later that the latter produced this “promise”, that of making it a film. The work bears this name to pay tribute to what the brothers and sisters had said.
In the film, Laurène is smiling, at home, in the hospital, alone or with her loved ones. His brother Thomas comments in the documentary “In his sterilized room, we spoke and redone the world”.
By learning the release of the film in French dark rooms, Morgan Bellec contacts Thomas Hug de Larauze. The latter remembers her and tells her that Laurène often told her about her. “He offered to broadcast him (the film) in Nouméa all the more since he told me that I appeared in the film”. It’s done because since this Wednesday, April 30, 2025, “Promise” Projected every week at Cinécity.
