Known for having signed one of the first openly gay pop hymns, Jill Sobule died Thursday, May 1, 2025 at 66. A brutal disappearance for a committed artist whose voice and fights have marked several generations.

American singer Jill Sobule, known for her tube I Kissed a Girl in 1995, considered as The first openly gay songdied in the fire of her house in Woodbury, Minnesota, on May 1, at the age of 66, reports Bfmtv et 20 minutes.

Scheduled for a series of concerts across the United States, Sobule was to perform in Denver, Colorado, on May 2, before continuing its tour in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Minneapolis.

In a press release relayed by Varietyhis manager John Porter paid tribute to the artist: “Jill Sobule was a force of nature and a human rights activist whose music is an integral part of our culture. I had a lot of fun working with her. I lost a client and a friend today.” He added: “I hope that his music, memory and heritage will continue to live and inspire other people.”

One career in three decades

With A career extending over three decadesJill Sobule released 12 albums, including tubes like Supermodelwritten for the soundtrack of the cult film Clueless (1995), et Bitter. Son premier album, Things Here Are Different (1990), made it known, notably thanks to the title Too Cool to Fall in Love.

The artist, born in Denver, has always claimed An open and personal artistic approach. In 2023, she had created the musical FCK 7th grade*, which tackles the challenges of adolescence. She also explained that she quickly understood that she had a “Beguin for his friends”which pushed her to create this project.

Beyond the scene, his work reflected his commitment, approaching themes such as adolescent malaise, LGBTQ +questions, anorexia and the death penalty.
