Volodymyr Zelensky said that he did not want to “play” with the short truces proposed by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, including a ceasefire from May 8 to 10, considering these deadlines too short to lead serious talks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that his meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump at the Vatican, April 26, had allowed the latter to “a little differently” the conflict in Ukraine.

“I am confident that after our meeting at the Vatican, President Trump began to see things a little differently,” said Zelensky.

On the conflict itself, Zelensky said he did not want to “play” with the short truces proposed by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, including a cease-fire from May 8 to 10, considering these deadlines too short to lead serious talks.

“It doesn’t seem serious”

“It is impossible to agree on something in three, five or seven days (…) It is impossible to find a plan to establish the next steps to finish the war. It does not seem serious,” Mr. Zelensky told a small group of journalists on Friday, including those of AFP, once again calling for an unconditional truce of 30 days.

He also indicated that kyiv could not guarantee the “security” of international leaders who will be present in Moscow on May 9 at the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of victory against Nazi Germany.

“We do not know what Russia will do on this date. It could take different measures, such as fires, explosions, and then accuse us,” he said, when the leaders of around twenty countries must stand alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 9, including his Chinese counterparts Xi Jinping and Brazilian Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, as well as those of traditional allies Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, Cuba or Venezuela.
