The head of Russian diplomacy Sergei Lavrov, who made a stopover in Santo Domingo after a meeting of the BRICS in Brazil, said on Wednesday (April 30) that the Dominican Republic was a “promising partner” in Moscow in the region, in particular in terms of tourism.
First step of this “partnership” Promising, Russia will soon open an embassy in the Dominican Republic while Moscow and Santo Domingo plan to remove the reciprocal visas.
“The Dominican Republic is our promising partner in the Latin and Caribbean region, we appreciate traditional friendly relations between our countries”said Lavrov the head of Russian diplomacy, according to the translation shared by the Ministry of External Relations of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Lavrov, who spoke with his Dominican counterpart Roberto Alvarez then with President Luis Abinader (liberal trend), stressed: “We spoke first of tourism, to expand the tourist flow”.
-Dominican Minister Roberto Alvarez insisted on the problems of Haiti, with whom his country shares the island of Hispaniola. “I presented in detail to Minister Lavrov the Dominican position which advocates a more efficient coordinated and urgent action of the multinational security support mission in Haiti”said the minister, stressing “The deep political, security and humanitarian crisis that affects Haiti”.
“We hope that the United Nations will play a central role in logistics and financing to ensure its effectiveness (of the multinational mission). In this sense, we have asked for collaboration from Minister Lavrov” And in Russia, said Mr. Alavarez. Mr. Lavrov did not address the subject in his statements.
Haiti is in the cente of Dominican policy, the president abinader regularly commenting on the unstable situation of his neighbor, with whom he maintains complicated relations.
Mr. Abinader made the fight against Haitian immigration one of his battle horses. Since coming to power in 2020, the head of state, triumphantly re -elected in 2024, has hardened migration policy, notably launching the construction of a wall along the border between his country, richer, and Haiti, undermined by the poverty and violence of the gangs.
