The Italian Lorenzo Fortunato won the second stage of the Tour de Romandie on Thursday, after having placed himself in the decisive escape in the same way as the French Alex Baudin, who seizes him from the leader jersey, at 23 years old.
Leaving about 25 km from the Grande Béroche, before Fortunato spoke in the last kilometer, the two men and their three fellow travelers played a perfect turn to the favorites, starting with Remco Evenepoel. The Sudal of the double Olympic champion had however taken control of this 157 km loop, taking advantage of the four passes including the Abrupt Chaumont (3.2 km at 11.4%) to skim the peloton and release the yellow jersey, the British Matthew Brennan.
But for lack of collaboration between the favorites, it is Baudin (EF Education) who benefits general, to count now 5 and 6 seconds ahead of the Belgians Junior Lecerf and Lennert Van Eetvelt. Evenepoel, who has played his first stages in stages since his serious fall in training in early December, dates back three rows and points to sixth place, 52 seconds.
