Adam Pearson and Sebastian Stan preview of “A Different Man”.

CINEMA – After John Hurt, it’s in turn to become Elephant Man. The actor Adam Pearson, star of black comedy A Different Man With Sebastian Stan who will be released in France soon, will play Joseph Merrick in a new adaptation of the multi -fomestic play The Elephant Man. Affected by a genetic disease that affects his appearance, Adam Pearson is the first disabled player who will occupy this role.

“Joseph Merrick is a man with whom I maintain a long and complex relationship. From the use of his name as a term of derision until the discovery of the man he was in the documentaries that I presented. It was a cathartic journey that allowed me to learn to love and respect a man to whom, as a child, I avoided thinking “says Adam Pearson in a press release reported Variety.

Adam Pearson suffers from a neurofibromatosis that deforms his tissues and/or bones with benign tumors. But he takes advantage of his position as a public personality to raise awareness of the inclusion of disabled people. “Today, as a defender of people with disabilities and actor, I do not see any greater honor (but also more heavy responsibility) than telling the true story of Joseph Carey Merrick”continues the actor.

Adaptation of an adaptation

The scenario of this adaptation of The Elephant Man Was written by Moby Pomerance who is none other than the son of Bernard Pomerance, the playwright at the origin of the 1977 play which won three Tony Awards. Piece which is also inspired by the memoirs of Frederick Treves, the doctor who took care of Joseph Merrick.

This is not the first time that the story of this man has been adapted to the cinema. In 1980, David Lynch produced The Elephant Mana film in which John Hurt (Alien, the eighth passenger) interpreted the patient and Anthony Hopkins (A life) played the role of the doctor Frederick Treves. Very acclaimed by criticism, the feature received eight nominations at the Oscars and seven to the Baftas which he left with three prizes including that of the best film and best actor for John Hurt.

But we will still have to wait to discover the new adaptation with Adam Pearson to the cinema since filming is only planned for spring 2026.
