US vice-president Vance predicts a prolonged war in Ukraine

Main information

  • US vice-president JD Vance predicts an extended war in Ukraine.
  • The American administration facilitates dialogue between Russia and Ukraine in order to find common ground and end hostilities.
  • The two nations are responsible for the conclusion of an agreement and the cessation of the devastating conflict.

US vice-president JD Vance recently expressed his conviction that the war in Ukraine was likely to continue for a considerable period. In an interview with Fox News, he recognized the persistence of the conflict and underlined the need to resolve it. Mr. Vance suggested that the main concern of the American administration was now to facilitate dialogue between Russia and Ukraine in order to find common ground and put an end to hostilities.

  • However, he underlined the responsibility of the two nations to reach an agreement and to put an end to the devastating conflict.

Vance’s comments follow a recent agreement between Washington and kyiv, in which the United States has undertaken to share the profits drawn from the rare Ukraine earth minerals in exchange for future security assistance. During the interview, Vance also defended President Trump’s approach to war in Ukraine. He recognized the anger felt by the Ukrainians following the invasion, but wondered about the feasibility of a continuous loss of troops due to territorial disputes. Trump had previously proposed that Ukraine plans to give in Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, as part of a truce agreement.

  • However, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky indicated his inability to accept Russian control of the peninsula, citing constitutional constraints.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio underlined the urgent need of a breakthrough in the conflict, warning that otherwise Trump should determine the extent of his commitment to the situation.

Three-day ceasefire from May 8

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a temporary three-day ceasefire from May 8, coinciding with the birthday celebrations of the Second World War. The Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, offered an immediate 30-day ceasefire. Despite these calls for the cessation of hostilities, the fighting continues.
