Russian strikes on the city center of Soumy, in northeast of Ukraine, near the Russian border, left at least 34 dead and a hundred wounded. This attack is the deadliest in a civil area for months in the country.

The missiles hit the city on Sunday morning, while people gathered to celebrate twigs on Sunday, Sunday before Easter. Images have shown lines of black mortuary bags on the side of the road, while other bodies have been seen wrapped in aluminum blankets among the debris.

Videos have also shown firefighter teams fighting to put out carcasses of burned cars among the rubble of damaged buildings.

Among the dead are two children, the Ukrainian state emergency service said in a statement. Fifteen other children were also injured, to various degrees.

“The first missile struck a building – one of the university buildings. The second exploded practically on the street. 117 people were injured, including children, including a little girl born in 2025”said Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Ukrainian leader criticized Russia for what he described as an odious attack targeting civilians.“The strike hit the city center on the day of the branches. Only filth of filth can act in this way”.

Volodymyr Zelensky has regularly accused Moscow of saving time to get more concessions, questioning their seriousness in matters of peace.

“They are not afraid. And that is precisely why they use ballistic missiles. This is why there are a hundred attacks each night, most of them being shaheds (attack drones) which target ordinary Ukrainian cities”and Ajouté M. Greats.

He also called for a global reaction to the attack, saying that “Only decisive pressures and actions” would prevent attacks like Sunday from undermining efforts to end war.

Soumy’s attack comes one day after the Russian and Ukrainian diplomats have accused each other of having violated a provisional agreement concluded under the aegis of the United States in order to suspend the strikes on energy infrastructure, thus stressing the difficulties in negotiating the end of the war that has lasted for more than three years.

Located just 30 kilometers from the Russian border, Soumy undergoes repeated attacks on the part of the Russian forces in recent weeks. Since Moscow pushed a large part of the Ukrainian troops from the Russian region of Koursk, this city has become the new target of the Kremlin.
