Decomposed family. First album translated in French by the British author Paul B. Rainey, veteran of the self -compliance, Why Don’t You Love Me Begins like the acid chronicle of a drifting family. The mother, Claire, is depressed and alcoholic. She does nothing of her days, forgets to take the children to school, sends her 7 -year -old son to buy her cigarettes, enters an unknown to insult him. The father, Mark, also seems to lose ground. He calls his son Tommy while named Charley, is unable to find the password of his computer. Back to work after a sick leave, he no longer knows what his job is, does not remember his colleagues … The two children are delivered to themselves and the game console. Mark and Claire, who make fun of everything, even their kids, no longer get along. He wants to leave her, she flirts with the father of a comrade from her daughter – an attraction that will at least allow her to pull herself up. This story could only be tragic, even disturbing for the reader in a voyeur position, if Paul B. Rainey did not show black and ironic humor, reflected in the murderous dialogues of the couple who, beyond their degling, remains lucid on the absurdity of the situation. But above all, half of the work, Paul B. Rainey makes history skid by a curious theater that puts everything back into perspective. Because it may not be (only) in the heads of the protagonists that it does not turn round … Why Don’t You Love Me Then takes the appearance of an episode of “the fourth dimension”, a twist which makes it possible to consider otherwise this couple in perdition, even to understand it.
Disconcerting and brilliant, Why Don’t You Love Me It is not without evoking Daniel Clowes in the way of associating daily frustrations and fantastic elements. Behind his Soap side, supported by the structure of the album – scenes in a black and white page, cut in an identical way, united in an Italian album -, Why Don’t You Love Me Brasse subtly a multitude of themes. End observer of modern life, Paul B. Rainey points as much bullshit jobs that relations of subordination at work, the vagaries of the life of couple and parents. Strongly melancholy behind his bite, Why Don’t You Love Me is also a moving reflection on the atonement and the renunciation of his dreams.
