The City of Laval claims that it actively monitors the situation of spring floods due to the accelerated increase in flow rates and levels.
This situation was caused by the melting of snow and recent episodes of violent thunderstorms.
An anti-inflation linear dike has already been erected on Riviera Street, which runs along the Mille-Îles River in Laval-Ouest, in order to protect infrastructure and a hundred residences.
Other temporary protection measures are to be expected, depending on the development of the situation. Citizens are also invited to be vigilant.
Precautions to take
People living in a flood zone should remain attentive to the flood of the rivers, ensure the proper functioning of their evacuation pump (SUMP PUMP) and validate their insurance coverage in the event of flood.
Among the ways to ensure their security and that of their families, citizens can:
- Register for the city alerts in the event of important opinion or emergency situations;
- Write a family security plan, which should include emergency contacts, the place to find refuge in the event of evacuation and more;
- Prepare a bag ready to leave, including essential items in the event of emergency evacuation;
- Gather the items necessary to be independent at home for at least 72 hours in the event of a containment or power failure.
In the case of flooding, it is crucial to close the electricity if the water has started to climb and get closer to electrical elements. Before proceeding, it is recommended to have your feet on a dry surface and use a wooden stick to cut the current and avoid contact with the electric box.
Citizens should also close the main entrance to natural gas, as well as bottles of bottles and propane or mazout tanks.
-You have to stay away from the electric lines and electric wires that have fallen to the ground at all times, even if there is a power failure.
If the water represses by the floor drain or the sewer pipes, it is possible to block the entries with a cloth. The city also recommends avoiding walking in flood waters without boots, as they can be dangerous and contaminated.
Remember that a combustion cooking appliance should never be used inside your home.
Finally, Laval citizens in emergency situations are invited to communicate directly with 911. Those whose installations are affected by water must quickly communicate with Hydro-Québec to cut the power supply and notify the fire safety service by composing 911. (N.P.)
