Chinese President Xi Jinping will take an official visit to Russia from May 7 to 10, on the occasion of the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Allies’ victory over Nazi Germany during the Second World War (1939-1945). During this visit, XI will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in order to strengthen their global strategic partnership and sign several bilateral agreements.

It will be the third visit of Xi Jinping in Russia since the trigger of the conflict in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. This trip also coincides with the victory day, celebrated on May 9 in Russia. On this occasion, Vladimir Putin proposed a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine during the festivities, a proposal rejected by kyiv.
Officially neutral in the armed conflict in Ukraine, China nevertheless supports the Russian position that the West has caused hostilities. Beijing also continues to provide essential components to the Russian defense industry and buy the gas and Russian oil that Europe has abandoned.
China and Russia, both nuclear powers, increased their rapprochement in the 2000s, sharing a common opposition to the influence of the United States and their allies on the international scene. They are founding members of the BRICS and the Shanghai cooperation organization.

The participation of President Xi Jinping in the Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9 was announced in February by the Russian ambassador to Beijing, Igor Morgoulov. In April, Vladimir Putin said it would be a full -fledged state visit.

On May 9, more than twenty foreign heads of state were expected in Moscow. Among the confirmed leaders are Chinese President Xi Jinping, Biélorusian President Alexandre Loukachenko, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pachinian, the secretary general of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam, as well as Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, among others.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not make the trip to Moscow, due to increased tensions with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terrorist attack. It was initially planned that the Indian Minister of Defense, Rajnath Singh, will represent him during the parade. However, according to India Todayhe will not participate in the ceremony either; His assistant Sanjay Seth is expected to make the trip in his place.
In addition, less than a week before commemorations, two European leaders priced – Robert Fico and Aleksandar Vučić – have encountered health problems. The Serbian President Vučić had to interrupt a visit to the United States to be hospitalized in Belgrade. He has since been authorized to leave the military medical academy. His doctor said that Vučić had felt sharp short -term chest pain, accompanied by blood pressure disorders.

China and Russia were two essential actors in the fight against fascism in Asia and Europe, undergoing important losses and playing a decisive role in the victory of the Allies during the Second World War (1939-1945).
