The trial of Christopher Schurr, the policeman who had shot a 26-year-old Congolese migrant, began on April 28 in the United States. The former Grand Rapids police officer advanced the argument of self -defense during his trial for second degree murder.

Christopher Schurr, a former Grand Rapids police officer, Michigan, is tried for second degree murder in the death of Patrick Lyoya, a 26 -year -old Congolese immigrant, shot down during a road check on April 4, 2022. The incident, captured by videos, shows a struggle between Schurr and Lyoya after the latter tried to flee. Lyoya grabbed Schurr’s taser, who then shot him with a bullet in the nape of the neck when he was face down. Schurr claims to have acted as a self -defense, fearing for his life, while the accusation maintains that the use of the lethal force was excessive and unjustified, the taser not representing a deadly threat.

The trial, started on April 28, 2025, sparked tensions, with demonstrations of support for Schurr and calls for justice for Lyoya. The debates focus on the legitimacy of the use of force, the role of the taser and the warnings given by Schurr. Experts in use of the divergent force: some maintain that Schurr was in danger, others that the lethal force was not necessary. Lyoya, father of two children, was in intoxication (blood alcohol level three times than the legal limit) and had an arrest warrant for domestic violence, unknown to Schurr.

The mainly white jury must determine if Schurr is guilty, which could lead to life in life. The verdict is expected soon, the trial being in its final phase in early May 2025.
