The forest fire season officially started in Canada, and the British Columbia authorities, the most western province in the country, warn against an increased risk of fires in the coming days.

The British Columbia Forest Fire Service announced on Friday that 26 fires were active in the province, two of which were tried out of control.

The abnormally hot, dry and windy conditions contribute to a high risk of fires, warned the authorities.

One of the out of control fires extended on Friday over 56 hectares (138 acres) north of the city of Fort St. John, in the northeast of the province.

This fire temporarily forced the evacuation of certain residents of the city on Thursday evening, but the evacuated were able to return to their home on Friday, while the fire continued to progress towards the northeast, moving away from the city.

The second out of control fire covered 185 hectares (457 acres) Friday morning and was located southeast of the Dawson Creek community, still in northeast British Columbia.

The provincial government has called on the population not to perform open -air burns and to point out any fire departure, whether important or not.

The 2024 forest fire season in Canada was one of the most destructive ever recorded, largely due to a fire that devastated a tourist town in Canadian Rockies.
