The Algerian operator of electricity and Sonelgaz gas is crossed a new level in the field of gas turbines. With its American partner General Electric Vernova (GEV), Sonelgaz has concluded new agreements allowing it to acquire new shares on the international gas turbines.

The Algerian group and the American General Electric Vernova have signed several memorandums of understanding for the export of electrical and gas equipment, focusing on gas turbines and energy transport network equipment.

Gas turbines: Sonelgaz strengthens its partnership with General Electric Vernova

Memorandums were signed by Mourad Adjal, CEO of Sonelgazfor the Algerian part, and Joseph Anis and Philippe Piron, respectively vice-president for the gas systems and director of electrical systems of Ge Vernova, for the American part.

“Sonelgaz and Ge Vernova have taken a new step in the field of export of gas turbines and high -voltage electric power plant equipment through their joint Geat project which aims to strengthen the Sonelgaz place on the international energy industries,” said the Algerian public monopoly of electricity and gas in a press release released on Tuesday, April 29.

Through the Geat (General Electric Algeria Turbines) project, the two groups produce gas turbines in a factory located in Batna in the east of Algeria.

“These new agreements reflect the desire of the two parties to develop their partnership and constitute an important step towards achieving the national objectives of industrial development and enhancement of local added value, in addition to the acquisition of shares in international markets,” adds Sonelgaz.

The agreements include the manufacture of equipment at the Geat factory in Batna and the marketing of several types of gas turbines and high-voltage electric power plants, up to 35% of the total capacity estimated at 20 gigawatts and intended for export to a country in the Middle East, explains Sonelgaz, without specifying which country it is.

It is also a question of exporting turbines and energy transport equipment to another country in the Middle East during the last quarter of the year 2025, adds the same source. The two parties also established a training plan at the Geat factory for technology transfer.

Gas turbines: a new American competitor for Sonelgaz

“This partnership will allow Sonelgaz to strengthen its position as the main actor in strengthening national capacities in the energy industries, and to consolidate its presence at regional and international levels,” concludes the Algerian group.

The announcement of the conclusion of these new agreements occurs a few days after the signing of an agreement between Gev and Duke Energy for the supply of 11 American manufacturing gas turbines. The turbines that GEV will provide are produced in its Greenville factory, in South Carolina.

Some foreign media, notably from the Middle East, such as Al Arabiya, quickly concluded that this contract was done at the expense of Sonelgaz which thus loses a potential market. A conclusion very quickly denied by concrete agreements which strengthen the position of the Algerian enterprise on the world market for gas turbines.

In 2024, Sonelgaz exported 268 million euros in electricity, up 22% compared to 2023.
